Why You Should Compare Yourself to Others
You should absolutely be comparing yourself to others…
Just not the way you're currently doing it.
Most people look at those around them and instantly either:
TALK DOWN ON THEMSELVES about why they aren't good enough, or how the other person is better or more qualified.
MAKE EXCUSES for why that other person is successful (they just got lucky, life is easier for them, people like them more, they were raised with more money, blah blah blah).
But effective comparison stays away from this type of self-criticism, and instead turns toward social learning.
In other words, comparing yourself to others from a growth mindset is extremely powerful.
Instead of creating a narrative about all the ways you're not measuring up, focus on what makes others successful and what you can learn from them.
Next time you look at those who are crushing it, ask yourself:
What specific things are they doing that I'm not?
Which of their habits could I adopt and make my own?
How are they approaching challenges differently than I do?
What connections are they building that I might be overlooking?
It’s not a mindset shift that happens overnight. It takes active practice to catch yourself in those comparison spirals and redirect your thinking.
It’s the kind of self-awareness that isn’t innate; it’s nurtured. And here’s the thing:
When you transform comparison from a source of shame into a resource for growth, you turn what was once your biggest mental roadblock into your most powerful development tool.
Crazy, right?
The most successful people I coach all have this in common: they're constantly studying others, and because they are confident, they use that perspective to evolve, rather than feel inadequate.
What's one person you've been comparing yourself negatively to that you could instead view as a case study to help you get better at something?
Emulating the right people is powerful for your career… and your life.
